Professor Tom Solomon CBE FRCP FMedSci
Doctor, Researcher, Clinical Academic Leader
Academic Vice President, Royal College of Physicians @RunningMadProf
We have a winner!
Many congratulations to Dr Mumtaz Patel on being elected 123rd president of the Royal College of Physicians. With 5151 votes this was the largest turnout for many years. Mumtaz who was former Vice President for Education and Training and before that Global Vice President, has been acting as president for 9 months and is a deserving winner. I am proud to have come second in the election and look forward to continuing as Academic Vice President supporting Mumtaz and the rest of the team to deliver the changes which are vitally needed at the college. I would like to thank the other presidential candidates for sharing their thoughts on the future of the college, and the many people who supported my campaign in various ways.

Yes, I'm Standing
I have been nominated for President of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) of London. As many of you will know, the RCP has had a difficult 18 months. The controversy over the role of physician associates in medicine led to the resignation of the president in June 2024, followed by a pretty damning independent report criticising the college’s senior leadership, governance and culture. Even though I have been on RCP council since 2019, and a censor since 2022, I was not part of the senior leadership team, and like many members and fellows, I felt that that my voice was not being heard. I became Academic Vice President in August 2024, and have helped steady the ship since then. However, to develop a modernised, fit-for-purpose RCP, we need really strong leadership right at the top of the college; someone who understands how the RCP works, and what needs changing; someone with senior leadership experience outside of the college, and a proven track record in organisational change; someone who knows how to work with and influence governments.
Spread the Word
Whichever of the eight candidates is elected as the next president, they will need the strong endorsement of the fellows. Typically a third of the fellows vote. We need much more than that this year. So do please let all your friends and colleagues who are fellows now about the upcoming election.
